The Fujikura Fuel shaft felt a little lighter than ideal but balanced through my entire swing. I was also taken by the eye-catching paint splattered graphic Fujikura Fuel shaft. The Cobra logo in the centre helped me align with confidence and the big sweetspot is hard to miss.

I believe the Amp Cell Pro irons were the very start of this significant evolution for the brand.Aesthetically, this club - tested in orange, 3-4 Fairway - looks very cool and is about as trendy as they come, particularly in this flashy orange model as used by Cobra Puma staffer Rickie Fowler. It’s been fun to see Cobra step out on its own and establish itself as one of the best in the game. Today, Cobra is one of my consistently favorite clubmakers and produce some of the best products out there. It was a clear sign of bigger and better things to come for the snake. When the Cobra Amp Cell Pro irons came out years ago, it was the most excited I’d been for a club in a long time. The shorter muscle backs are easy to shape and get creative with coming into greens. Your biggest performance gains come from the balance and the feel. The longer irons will give you a little more grace and easier launch than that old set of DCIs sitting in the garage. Regardless of which club you’re hitting, you still need to be near the center of the face. Overall the Cobra Amp Cell Pro is not a forgiving set but the longer irons are a little more helpful than most. Generally speaking, the Amp Cell Pro has a satisfying tone for a forged players’ iron. The sound in a 4 iron still has click to it, but it has less authority than the MBs. From there the sound gets “puffier” as you work through the long irons. A solid strike from the muscle backs is a muted click. The sound of the Cobra Amp Cell Pro is largely dependent on which of the irons you hit. The Amp Cell Pro was soft and responsive like a true forged blade should be. Previous Cobra players’ irons were firm and clicky. Naturally a poorly struck shot lets you know in the hands, but that’s what I expect out of this category. Hitting a strong shot feels soft with a lot of speed off the face. When the Cobra Amp Cell Pro irons came out, they were far and away the best feeling iron Cobra had made in recent history. The standard off-the-shelf offering is a “flow set” made up of double cavity backs through 6 iron, single cavity through 8, and muscle back through PW.

Depending on your preferences, the full set can be made up of different combinations of cavity and muscle backs.

Let’s be realistic though, the topline is far from chunky. The head is nice and compact with thinner soles and a medium sized topline for a players’ iron. What would the scary new Puma mother ship do to these irons?! Fortunately, as soon as I saw the first sneak peaks, my worries were vanquished.

Having been a fan of the darkhose Cobra models like the King Cobra Pro CB/MB and the S3 Pro, I was actually nervous for the Amp Cell Pro. With a classic shape and strong performance in these irons, Cobra put themselves back in the mix as one of the top clubmakers in golf. The Cobra Amp Cell Pro irons are a true players’ club with great feel and a demand of strong ball striking.

After years of making good clubs but being pushed back in the Acushnet shadows, Cobra‘s first players’ iron on their own made quite a statement.
